How Do You Live in a Student Dormitory?

A room or apartment in a student residence is the ideal solution if you want to enjoy your own space while still staying connected to the community. It’s an easy, flexible, and practical choice for everyday life.

Most residences are located close to universities and offer an all-inclusive rent that covers utilities and extras like common areas, fitness rooms, or even saunas. Fully furnished apartments often include regular cleaning services, allowing you to focus entirely on your studies and free time!

Depending on your preference, you can live in a private apartment, a shared flat, or a double room. Whether it’s having breakfast together, attending lectures nearby, or studying in the dedicated lounges – student residences perfectly combine independence with a lively social life.

Benefits of Living in a Student Accommodation

A major advantage of living in a student residence is the all-inclusive rent, which not only covers your apartment but also all utilities such as electricity, heating, hot water, and even ORF fees. At STUWO, you also benefit from free internet and Wi-Fi throughout the building, regular room cleaning, and an in-house laundry room with affordable washing machines and dryers.

Another highlight is the modern infrastructure. Most STUWO residences are fully furnished, allowing you to move in hassle-free without worrying about furniture or equipment. They are also ideally located – close to universities, well connected to public transport, and surrounded by shopping options.

You can choose from various room categories to suit your needs:

  • Single apartments with a private bathroom, WC, and kitchenette
  • Shared apartments (for two or three people) with a shared kitchen, bathroom, and WC
  • Double apartments and couple apartments, perfect for two people
  • Some residences even offer balconies or terraces, depending on the location

Many STUWO residences also provide free extras:

  • Fitness areas with equipment, free weights, and cardio zones for intense workouts
  • Wellness areas with saunas for relaxation
  • Learning lounges for focused studying
  • Music practice rooms for musicians or those who want to become one
  • Party and community rooms for socializing and celebrations
  • Rooftop terraces, gardens, or green courtyards for unwinding

Each student residence is unique, but one thing is certain: here, you get more for your money and a home that perfectly fits your student life.

Student Accommodation Requirements: Everything You Need to Know

Are you convinced that living in a student residence is the right choice for you and ready to move in? Then you’re probably wondering what requirements you need to meet. From application deadlines and necessary documents to specific guidelines – here, you’ll find all the essential information about the application process and moving in!

How Do I Apply for Student Dormitory?

The application process varies depending on the student residence, but it’s usually handled online or via email through an application or booking platform. It’s important to keep an eye on application phases and deadlines. At STUWO, you can apply anytime – the earlier, the better!

In addition to your personal details, you’ll need a certificate of enrolment, school attendance confirmation, or high school diploma. Some providers may also require proof of sufficient financial resources. If you’re an Erasmus student, you must submit proof of your Erasmus program admission.

If a spot in your preferred category is available, you’ll be contacted or receive an offer directly. Once accepted, the contract is signed, and a move-in date is set.

At STUWO, you can conveniently secure your place by paying via credit card or instant bank transfer. Your first payment includes the first month’s rent plus a security deposit, which will be refunded upon move-out, minus any outstanding fees. After moving in, it’s recommended to set up a SEPA direct debit to ensure timely monthly payments, so you never have to worry about due dates.

There are usually no age limits – as long as you meet the requirements, you can apply at any time.

So, what are you waiting for? Apply now at STUWO and secure your spot!

Can Non-Students Live in a Student Apartment?

As the name suggests, student residences are primarily intended for students, which is why enrolment at a university is usually required. However, some student residences also welcome recent graduates, interns, and young professionals.

At STUWO, exceptions can be made for students attending schools that lead to an A-level equivalent qualification (Matura in Austria), such as HTL, HAK, or HAS, provided they turn 18 during the school year or are already of legal age. However, if applicants are under 18, a written parental consent is required.

Costs of a Student Apartment: Room Types and Options

The cost of a student residence depends on the room category and the included services. Single apartments offer maximum privacy with a private bathroom, WC, and kitchenette.

If you prefer a shared living experience, rooms in a 2-person or 3-person shared apartment with a common kitchen, bathroom, and WC are a great option. For those wanting to live with their partner or a close friend, couple apartments or double rooms are ideal. In these, you share a room, and in couple apartments, even the bed. Some residences also offer rooms with balconies or terraces for added comfort. Want to know which room options are available at STUWO? Check them out here!

Thanks to the all-inclusive rent, you have full cost control, as all utilities are included. Additional services like cleaning or fitness areas make living in a student residence even more comfortable – often at a lower cost than renting a private apartment.

Most student residences also have in-house laundry facilities with washing machines and dryers. While there is a fee for using them, it is usually cheaper than a public laundromat since it primarily covers operating costs, maintenance, and upgrades. Exact prices may vary depending on the location and provider.

Length of Stay in Student Accommodation

The length of your stay in a student residence depends on the terms of your contract. At STUWO, contracts are typically signed for up to twelve months, covering both the winter and summer semesters, to ensure students have accommodation throughout the academic year. For Erasmus students, the minimum contract duration is one semester.

In some cases, shorter stays are possible. During the summer months, many residences offer short-term rental agreements for interns or young professionals who need a flexible housing solution after their studies.

If you are already living in a student residence and wish to extend your stay, you will typically receive an offer for contract renewal in the spring, provided an extension is possible.
